Pookie tha Poet
Jay-lin; Dance-ler

Jalyn Christina Dantzler is no stranger to the poetry field. Her creativity ranges from visual arts including dance and painting to oration. Her creative writing initially stemmed from writing in a prayer journal when she was in children’s church. When she started graduate school at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama as a Master’s student in the Women’s Studies Program, free writing became more of an ideal. She finds confidence in discussing her mental health as she matriculates through life. She has been a silent caregiver since she was in middle school. She recently wrote a poem called ” Body of Nature” that was accepted by Marr’s Field Journal at the University of Alabama and was published in April 2024.

Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Jalyn spent the majority of her life being raised by her father’s parents. She is the eldest daughter of Derek C. Dantzler and the eldest granddaughter of Joseph Dantzler and the late Josepehine Brown Dantzler. She attended Stillman College where she majored in Biology and graduated in April 2022 Magna Cum Laude. She was initiated into the Delta Sigma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 2021. She is currently finishing up her Master’s degree from the University of Alabama where she is active in her department as a Graduate Teaching Assistant teaching Intro to Women’s Studies while working on her thesis project about analyzing the importance of Black women’s experiences with reproductive health in Alabama.

Phenomentally Hollow By Faith.Marie 62 lines, I was born in 1962 after Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size    But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies. I say, It’s in the reach of my arms, The span of my hips,    The stride of my step,    The curl of my lips.    I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman,    That’s me.
